PONTIAC (WWJ) – On the same day a 16-year-old girl was arrested for making social media threats that closed Ferndale schools for the day, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is out with a social media warning aimed at students across the county.

Saying Oakland County remains “inundated” with threats against schools, Bouchard says every threat will be investigated and sent to the prosecutor’s office. Even if the student doesn’t intend to carry it out.

“And we will attempt to hold you fully accountable,” Bouchard said in a video posted to the department’s Facebook page. “So I repeat – any threat is a crime, whether or not you think it is a joke. Because it is not a joke.”

Bouchard said “I need every student in Oakland County to listen and hear” his two-pronged message. The other facet of his message was urging all students to report any potential threats to adults, whether parents, teachers or law enforcement.

“We need you to be part of helping us keep you safe,” he said. “All of the police departments in Oakland County and the sheriff’s office work together every day to keep you safe.”

But he says every student and teacher is “probably in a position to see or hear something they think is of concern as it relates to a threat or their safety.”

If you do, you need to share that information, Bouchard said.

Confidential tips can be submitted to law enforcement through the state’s Ok2Say app or website.
