Oakland County Sheriff's deputy hospitalized after crash with wrong-way driver

PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A suspected wrong-way, red light-running drunk driver slammed into a Oakland County Sheriff's patrol car early Friday morning.

WWJ’s Mike Campbell reports that incident happened after midnight when a deputy on routine patrol in a regulation Impala cruiser was struck by a driver in a Ford Crown Victoria.

The 36-year-old suspect was reportedly going westbound in the eastbound lanes of Michigan Avenue, when he ran a red light at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and crashed into the cruiser.

The Sheriff’s Department says 6-year veteran deputy has been hospitalized with very serious injuries.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash, and the wrong-way driver was arrested.
