BLOOMFIELD TWP (WWJ) -- After a devastating fire tore through Oakland Hills Country Club last winter, leadership has put forth an $83 million proposal to rebuild the historic clubhouse.
On the morning of February 17, fire crews from several cities responded to smoke and flames at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, which opened in 1916 and has hosted six U.S. Opens, a Ryder Cup and many other major tournaments.
First responders worked for over 24 hours to fully extinguish the blaze, which had gotten a sizable head start.
Thankfully, no one was injured, but the fire destroyed the entire clubhouse, which was filled with irreplaceable golf tournament memorabilia and art.
Now club members will have to vote on the rebuilding project -- and its price tag.
According to WWJ's Jeff Lessen, $55 million of the $83 million total will come from the club's insurance policy.
The other $28 million will be raised by increasing membership dues. Under the current plan, members will pay an extra $165 each month.
If approved, the clubhouse is expected to re-open in 2025.
Lessen says that the vote is set for next week, and the proposal is expected to pass.
