STERLING (WWJ) An on-duty Sterling Area firefighter was hit by a car on I-75 in Northern Michigan.

He was working "multiple accident scenes” when the vehicle struck, on Saturday, January 11th, according to a statement from Fire Chief Jason Rice.

An exact time or location of the crash was not given.

Rice identified the firefighter as James (Jimmy) Hartwick, who works part-time for the Sterling Area Fire Department.

According to the GoFund Me page Hartwick's brother set up, the car that hit him was driving too fast on the icy roads. Hartwick became pinned between the car and the firetruck while he was responding to a "multi-car crash."

His condition is still "very serious" but he's stable "at this time", Rice said in an update.

Hartwick's brother said they began the GoFundMe to help with living expenses since he will be out of work for an extended period of time, and travel expenses as his family goes back and forth from their Sterling home to the Saginaw hospital to be with him.

Sterling is a village of about 500 people, about 50 miles north of Saginaw.
