New Haven (WWJ) -- At least one school canceled classes on Monday in Macomb County because of bomb threats over the weekend.
Merritt Academy in New Haven announced on its Facebook page Sunday that the school would be closed on April 1. Administrators did not say why, but the Macomb County Sheriff's Office said that the charter school was one of several that phoned in threats.
Schools in Armada, Chesterfield Township, Clinton Township and Casco Township have also reported receiving threats. WWJ's Charlie Langton reports all of these incidents are being investigated, and parents are urged to reach out to their school districts for the latest information.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham acknowledged that this was happening on April Fool's Day --a day when pranks are common -- but said the threats cannot be taken lightly.
Under Michigan law, a person who calls in a school threat can receive up to 20 years in prison if convicted on a charge of False Threat of Terrorism.
