DETROIT (WWJ) -- As their baristas and cooks continue to strike over COVID-19 protocols, wages and other workplace protections, the owners of Great Lakes Coffee are speaking out.
In a statement, Greg and Lisa Miracle acknowledge the unionized workers' demands for clear COVID protocols and workplace protections, saying that their policies may not have been fully communicated to staff.
Staff at their Midtown location on Woodward Avenue launched a strike on Feb. 16, demanding employees receive a starting wage of at least $15 per hour, but the owners said they already earn $17 to $23 per hour, including tips and wages.
The Miracles' added that some employees are offered health insurance with paid time-off benefits in response to demands for affordable benefits.
The two both stated that they want to reach an amicable resolution.
The staff moved to unionize in early January, after confronting managers about PPE and health and safety protocols when nine workers tested positive for Covid-19.
