DETROIT (WWJ) -- The pandemic has forced a popular coffee shop in Midtown Detroit to close its doors for the foreseeable future.

The Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company shut down on Friday due to an outbreak of COVID-19 among its staff.

According to the Detroit Free Press, all employees will have to show negative PCR tests before returning to work.

The coffee house is located on Woodward Avenue, and frequently serves workers from the nearby Detroit Medical Center.

A sign on the door reads: “Due to unforeseen circumstances related to COVID-19, we are unable to open for the time being. This closing is TEMPORARY and we implore your patience during this difficult time. We will re-open the cafe as soon as we are able to. Thank you for your ongoing patronage and loyalty to our business.”

It remains unclear when Great Lakes Coffee, which employs a total of 15 workers, will reopen.

The news comes as the state of Michigan reported more than 44,000 new cases of COVID-19 this week as the omicron surge continues.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services also reported 56 virus-related deaths on Monday, bringing the state’s pandemic death toll to 27,878.

The total number of positive cases in Michigan since March 2020 is 1,681,135.
