DETROIT (WWJ) – With the North American International Auto Show set to open in Downtown Detroit this week, the Detroit People Mover is getting some quick upgrades.
The People Mover will be closed on Monday and Tuesday for noise reduction work before the auto show begins.
While the “familiar whirr of People Mover trains leaving and arriving at stations is a hallmark of downtown,” city officials say it’s time for some TLC.
“Over time, the steel rail-to-steel wheel connection points have resulted in a louder-than-normal travel experience,” a press release from the city said.
On Monday and Tuesday the Detroit Transportation Corporation will smooth the tracks. The rail grinding process is expected to last two days, opening in time for the Detroit Auto Show.
Regular service will restart on Wednesday, the start of the Auto Show’s media and technology days.
The People Mover will begin service an hour earlier on the weekends and remain open an hour later on Sundays until the end of the NAIAS on Sept. 24.
