DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit People Mover is scheduled to receive some much-need maintenance work next week to address a "louder-than-normal" travel experience, officials announced.

The Detroit Transportation Corporation (DTC) said they will stop service on Monday, Sept 11 and Tuesday, Sept. 12 to smooth out the tracks in time for the Detroit Auto Show, which kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

The People Mover's signature sound as it whirls along the cityscape has become increasing more noticeable -- and more grinding -- due to steel rail-to-steel wheel connection points, officials said.

The trains will cease to run for two days while crews make the necessary changes that officials said riders can "hear and feel."

“The equipment is hoisted onto the guideway,” explains DTC General Manager Robert Cramer. “It will make calibrations along the track to ensure that the rail is corrected and restored. We expect passengers and pedestrians will appreciate the difference – a quieter ride that will be a noticeable change.”

Service will start up the day following repairs on Wednesday, Sept. 13, just in time to welcome visitors for the Detroit Auto Show’s Media and Technology Days.

DTC added that service will begin one hour earlier o the weekend and stay open one hour later on Sunday through the end of the Detroit Auto Show on Sept. 24.
