CUSTER TWP. (WWJ) -- Six people had to be rescued from a West Michigan river over the weekend after their canoes and kayaks got stuck in a log jam.
At approximately 9:47 p.m. on Saturday, the Mason County Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police and fire departments from various locations responded to the Pere Marquette River in Custer Township on a report of a water emergency.
An initial report shows the victims were about 1.5 miles east up the river, stuck in the dark and a thunderstorm.
First responders reported that as they made their way up the river to rescue the victims, they had to pull and push their boats through waist-deep water and around multiple log jams.
Upon locating the victims, first responders said they were all exhausted and stuck in waist-deep mud. Two of the victims were starting to experience hypothermia and one victim was having heart complications.
All six people were treated and released at the scene.
