SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Several people in Southfield are without a home after a fire ripped through and destroyed at least eight apartments Monday morning.

Firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire at the Cranbrook Centre Apartments on South Drive, near Southfield Road at around 8 a.m., where flames were seen shooting through the building's roof and the first floor.

Extra firefighters from Royal Oak, Birmingham and Madison Heights had to be called to help with the amount of rescue possibilities and to battle the remaining hot spots, said Southfield's Fire Chief Johnny Menifee.

According to WWJ's Charlie Langton, the scene of the blaze was "chaotic" as there were a number of firefighters on the roof of the building and surrounding areas trying to put out the fire.

The destruction has resulted in a total loss for many -- but according to Langton, one resident said that that at the very least he has insurance.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The fire has since been put out.
