(WWJ) A victorious U.S. Sen. Gary Peters had some harsh words for his challenger, Republican John James, one day after Peters won re-election to a second term representing Michigan in the U.S. Senate.
Peters was asked to respond to allegations by the James campaign that there may have been voting irregularities in Wayne County.
"It's sad, and it's pathetic," Peters told reporters on Thursday. "They lost; it's very clear. Just count the votes, that is the bottom line, and we look at the votes."
"You know, I understand... Mr. James has been running for four years -- he's lost twice now. So I understand that that doesn't sit well with him."
James was leading earlier on as votes were coming in from polling precincts, but that lead evaporated as absentee votes were processed.
The unofficial count shows Peters being reelected by a total of just under 90,000 votes. The incumbent declared victory Wednesday night, after the Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced that ballot counting was complete.
But James is not ready to give up.
"While Senator Peters is currently ahead, I have deep concerns that millions of Michiganders may have been disenfranchised by a dishonest few who cheat," said James," who is calling for an investigation.
Benson, however, maintains that ballot counting was completed properly. She dismissed unsupported rumors of an illegal late night ballot dump, and called a since-dismissed lawsuit by the Trump campaign "frivolous."
