DUNDEE (WWJ) -- After leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a high speed chase from Ohio into Monroe County, a driver lost control of his vehicle -- crashing into a utility pole and killing his female passenger.

The pursuit began in Ohio Friday evening when the driver of a red 2007 Ford Fusion with active felony warrants failed to stop for police. Speeding off, the suspect was trailed by Toledo PD and Washington Township Police.

Around 9:30 p.m., the suspect crossed over from Ohio to Michigan, heading north on I-75. Toledo PD ended their pursuit while Washington Twp officers followed the red Fusion, providing updates on the driver's location.

Toledo PD contacted the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and alerted deputies to the situation.

Still driving north on I-75, the suspect exited to Summit St., then wound through several roadways before continuing north on Telegraph. Reaching Monroe, the Fusion turned west on S. Custer Rd.

By this time Monroe County Sheriff's deputies had picked up the chase. At one point, officers deployed spike strips, deflating two of the Fusion's tires.

Still driving west, the suspect entered Dundee, approaching the intersection at Monroe St. and Tecumseh. Unable to navigate the tight turn at such a high speed, the Fusion slammed into a utility pole and caught fire.

MCSO deputies managed to get both the driver and a female passenger out of the burning car.

The suspect -- a 31-year-old man from Napoleon, OH -- was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Law enforcement is withholding the man's name until he can be formally charged.

His passenger -- 46-year-old Leslie Rosales of Leipsic, OH -- was pronounced dead at a medical center that same night.

According to police, neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and the Fusion's airbags did not deploy.

Additional assistance was provided by the Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Dundee Police Department, Monroe Community Ambulance and Michigan State Police.

The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7756. Anonymous tips can be called into Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP or can be submitted on their website.
