DEARBORN (WWJ) -- While conducting an animal welfare check at a home in Dearborn, police discovered there were several abandoned Shih Tzus inside.

After noticing that they haven't seen the homeowner in about a week and that several dogs were also missing from the home, neighbors reported it to officers so it could be checked out.

On April 11, at about 11 a.m., when police arrived at the house in the 3400 block of Roosevelt Street, they saw that nobody was at home, but several dogs were heard barking.

When looking through the windows, they discovered unsanitary conditions.

Since there was a previous animal welfare case at the same address in 2019 and based on the conditions the officers could see, they entered the house through the unlocked front door and found 10 adult Shih Tzus and a puppy.

The police report said officers were immediately met with the strong odor of urine and feces, and that the floors were covered in both.

Due to the conditions in the house, it was marked unsafe to be in, and the owner was notified that it would have to be cleaned and inspected before anyone was allowed to stay there again.

According to Friends of Animals of Metro Detroit, the dogs are between 2 weeks old and 2-years-old, and the majority need some veterinary care and grooming.

Those interested in adopting can fill out an online application. Donations can also be made here.
