Police identify 70-year-old flagger killed while directing traffic through construction zone in Ingham County

A road worker who was hit and killed last week in a construction zone near Webberville has been identified as a 70-year-old man from Hillsdale, police confirmed.

MASON (WWJ) - A road worker who was hit and killed last week in a construction zone near Webberville has been identified as a 70-year-old man from Hillsdale, police confirmed.

James Edward Lockwood, 70, sustained fatal injuries in the crash which occurred on Grand River Avenue near M-52, west of Howell, around 2 p.m. on May 25th.

According to the the Ingham County Sheriff's Office, Lockwood was working as a flagger, directing traffic through the work zone, when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a a 23-year-old Williamston woman who was traveling east.

Deputies said the 70-year-old man had to be extracted from underneath the vehicle. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, deputies said.

The 23-year-old woman sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Lockwood was not an MDOT employee, but was employed by a contractor. The victim's name was released by the sheriff's office on Wednesday, almost a week after a crash.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing. No other details were released.

Last week's fatal incident marks the 14th MIOSHA-related death so far this year. There were 43 work-related fatalities in 2022 -- 2009 saw the lowest number with 24.
