ANN ARBOR (WWJ) Ann Arbor Police are investigating a non-fatal shooting near the campus of University of Michigan.

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security said Ann Arbor Police were called to a shooting on South University near Church St. around 12:30 a.m. (Sunday).

That's less than a quarter mile away from the heart of campus, including Mason, Angell, and Haven Halls, and the Departments Physics and Mathematics.

Three men were walking east on the south sidewalk, while one man was traveling in the opposite direction on the same sidewalk, police said.

As they passed one another, one of the men walking east got into a fight with the man traveling west.

The man traveling west pulled out a handgun and fired a round, striking the victim, according to police. The suspect then ran away from the crime scene.

The victim was treated at a local hospital for a non-life-threatening injury. His exact condition has not been released.

The suspect is described as a Black male, tall, wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood, white shorts, and black shoes with white soles.

It's unclear if the suspect or the victim are students at, or have any connection to, the university.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Ann Arbor Police Department at (734) 794-6920.

University of Michigan police are asking students, staff and faculty to please remember the following safety tips.

"-If you see something, say something. Report suspicious behavior. Call 911.
-Trust your intuition. If a particular situation makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, choose an alternative.
-Walk with a trusted friend or co-worker when possible."
