SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Police are investigating the murder of a 72-year-old woman at a Southfield apartment complex.

Police responded Friday morning to the Legacy Manor, in the area of 9 Mile Rd. and Greenfield, after getting a 911 call about a woman who was not breathing in her apartment.

Officers found the victim dead in a back bedroom. She had been shot in the back, police said.

The 23-year-old man who made the 911 call was arrested after giving dispatchers and officers conflicting information, police said.

Reporting from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said it appears that the victim knew the young man. He was described as having "close ties" to the woman's family.

"We don't have any details yet as far as the exact relationship between the two, or what this dispute was about," Langton said. "We do know there were multiple gunshots in the apartment."

Police said they are seeking a murder warrant for the man in custody.

No further information has been released as the investigation continues.
