SAGINAW, Mich. (WWJ) -- Officials say a bottle of Faygo pop was used to draw out an attempted bank robber in Saginaw, before police shot and killed the suspect, saving a woman he held hostage.
Michigan State Police this incident unfolded at around 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Mercantile Bank location at 5444 State St., near Mitchell.
According to the MSP Third District, when Tri-City Post troopers were called into assist Saginaw Township Police with barricaded person, they found that a man had taken an employee hostage, and that she was injured.
MSP Lt. Kim Vetter told WNEM that police used a drone to lower a 24 oz. red Faygo Red Pop in a bag to the suspect. And when he exposed himself, law enforcement could see the suspect through the glass of the building
MSP said a trooper was then able to engage and fatally shoot the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Quinton Marquese Allen from the Detroit area. Vetter said Allen never grabbed the bag.
It was not immediately clear whether Allen requested the Faygo, as police have not released any further details about that aspect of the case. Vetter said Allen didn't get a hold of the pop before he was shot.
MSP said the bank employee was taken to a local hospital with what police said were non-life threatening injuries. She has since been treated and released.
In a statement, Mercantile Bank thanked law enforcement for their "swift and professional response," saying that all bank employees are safe.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
