WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) -- Residents in Wayne County are being warned by law enforcement officials to watch out for a jury duty scam.

People are getting phone calls saying they failed to appear for assigned jury duty at the Third Circuit Court and are in contempt of court.

The caller then identifies themselves as either a member of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department or a member of the Third District Court and tells the person they need to make a payment on Venmo -- a cash payment app -- between $1,500 and $2,000 or they will be arrested.

Authorities said no one from the Sheriff's Office or the court will ever contact residents asking for money by telephone or any other means.

Officials said if you receive this jury duty scam call contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office to let them know as soon as possible.
