(WWJ) An Oakland County woman, who was caught driving drunk three times and had a suspended license, is facing charges in a deadly crash.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, 36-year old Leeann Darling of Pontiac allegedly ran a red light in a GMC Terrain at Woodward Ave. and Perry on Sept. 1, and crashed into a motorcycle.
The biker, 49-year old Jack Turnblom of Fenton, was taken to local hospital where he died later that night. His passenger was treated at the hospital and released.
Darling ran away from the scene, officials said, but investigators from the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit were able to identify her as a person of interest.
She turned herself in at the sheriff's department in Oct. 1.
The sheriff's office noted that Darling had an outstanding felony probation violation warrant out of Macomb County for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) – third offense.
“The inhumanity of striking a fellow human being and taking off to leave them to die is staggering,” said Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, in a statement. “The suspect in this case has had more than one opportunity to change their irresponsible and dangerous behavior but failed to do so. The terrible consequences of that decision must be something they are held accountable for.”
Darling has been charged with failure to stop at the scene of a crash and operating a motor vehicle while license suspended.
She faces up to 30-years in prison if convicted.
