FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after a popular restaurant in Monroe County went up in flames.

The Frenchtown Township Fire Department confirmed that a fire broke out at the Red Lobster on N. Dixie Highway near I-75, early Monday morning.

Monroe County Central Dispatch first received a call at 2:15 a.m. reporting smoke emanating from the restaurant. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene a short time later, and saw flames inside the building.

Firefighters from several departments including Frenchtown Township, City of Monroe, Monroe Township and Berlin Township were all called to the scene to fight the blaze.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

However, officials tell WWJ Newsradio 950 the building is a total loss.

"Oh, Red Lobster's very popular; it's been in the area for 30 years," said Frenchtown Township Fire Chief Wendy Stevens. "I think most of us frequent the restaurant. We're all kinda devastated."

Steven told WWJ the fire did not start in the kitchen and that the initial investigation doesn't show anything suspicious leading up to the fire.

The investigation into what cause the fire is still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office detective bureau at 734-240-7530.
