DETROIT (WWJ) — President Joe Biden will be in Detroit Sunday to headline the 69th annual Detroit Branch NAACP Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner.
Biden’s campaign confirmed that the POTUS he will be speaking at the event, at the event, scheduled for Sunday, May 19 at Huntington Place.
Rev. Wendell Anthony, head of the NAACP Detroit Branch, made the announcement at a press conference last week, calling it a “unique privilege and pleasure” to have Biden as a guest. Biden will be the second sitting president to speak at the dinner.
“President Biden comes at a critical time in our nation’s history. We face tremendous international challenges coupled with domestic and local issues that seek to divide us. However, it is our belief that if we work together as a people that we can resolve these issues for the benefit of all Americans,” Anthony said.
Outgoing Rep. Debbie Stabbenow will also attend the event, receiving a presidential award.
Honorees include members of Renaissance High School's 2023 national award-winning chess team, and Spain Elementary-Middle School's state and regional robotics championship team.
The dinner, the NAACP Detroit Branch’s largest annual event, is known to draw thousands of attendees each year. Starting at $150, tickets for the event can be purchased at detroitnaacp.org.
The announcement of Biden’s upcoming visit comes on the same day former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican candidate in this November’s election, is scheduled to speak at a campaign event in Freeland, northwest of Saginaw.
