DETROIT (WWJ) - Homicide investigators are working to determine what happened to a 53-year-old neurosurgeon who was discovered fatally shot, wrapped in a blanket and stashed in the upstairs crawlspace of his Boston-Edison district home.

The new details about the case were reported on Wednesday by a police source via The Detroit News, who said acquaintances of Dr. Devon Hoover were being sought and interviewed by detectives to try and piece together what led to his untimely death.

The Detroit Police Department previously told WWJ that they discovered the body after being called out to his home on Sunday, April 23, in the 100 block of W. Boston Blvd., near Woodward Avenue in the city's Boston Edison Historic District, for a wellfare check.

Officers entered the sizable house and discovered Hoover dead, shot in the back of the head, Detroit Police Cpl. Dan Donakowski confirmed.

Donakowski did not go into further detail, but an unnamed police source told The Detroit News that the body had been wrapped in a blanket or plastic, and shoved into an upstairs crawlspace.

Police have not yet named the victim as they continue to investigate, but St. John Hospital in Detroit, part of the Ascension Healthcare system, released a statement about the incident, identifying Hoover as the deceased.

"Devon Hoover, MD, was a dedicated and well respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by out community," a spokesperson said of his death. "Our sincerest condolence and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associated during this incredibly difficult time."

Neighbors told The Detroit News that Hoover lived alone in the home that he bought for $750,000 back in 2008. He often had parties and functions so visitors were not unusual, they mentioned.

According to his profile through Ascension Michigan, Hoover was a board-certified neurosurgeon with over 20 years of experience and had a special interest in neck and back disorders.
