CHESTERFIELD TWP (WWJ) -- A Chesterfield Township man and most of his family's pets were saved from a house fire Monday after a heroic teenager spotted smoke and stopped to help.

According to WWJ's Ryan Marshall, the homeowner was not aware of the growing blaze in his residence on the 28700 block of Anchor Drive, near 21 Mile and Jefferson Ave.

Fortunately, a high school student in the neighborhood spotted black smoke pouring from the house. The young man quickly called his father, who advised him to alert their neighbor and call 911.

Not long after the man escaped the burning home, the structure was fully engulfed.

Firefighters arrived and spent several hours extinguishing the flames.

Friends of the occupants told WWJ that most of the family's pets -- 7 cats and a pig -- were saved. Sadly, a dog and bird could not be rescued.

Several GoFundMe accounts have been set up to help the family with expenses, and the community is encouraged to donate clothing.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
