FERNDALE (WWJ) — A Redford man has been charged with attempted murder in connection with a shooting outside a Ferndale night club.

Coreyontai Hammonds, 29, was arrested Friday after a month-long investigation involving an FBI task force.

The shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 13 at the Orchid Theatre on 9 Mile Road, according to the Ferndale Police Department.

Ferndale officers on foot patrol in the downtown area heard shots fired in the Woodward Alley between 9 Mile and West Troy Street and quickly responded to the scene. Moments later they found a 29-year-old Warren man near the rear entrance who had been shot in the groin.

Officers performed lifesaving measures on the victims until medics arrived and took him to the hospital. The victim has since been released.

Investigators say the victim was standing on the patio outside the Orchid Theatre just before the shooting when a car pulled up. The victim walked towards the car and is believed to have exchanged words with Hammonds, who ultimately fired multiple shots.

Ferndale police investigators and the FBI’s Oakland County Gang and Violent Crime Task Force used a number of tools — including Flock Safety cameras — to identify Hammonds as the suspect. Authorities did not say where he was arrested on Friday.

Investigators determined the shooting was a targeted incident involving the two men, who knew each other prior to the shooting. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

“This highlights how swift action, advanced technology, and strong partnerships can lead to the apprehension of dangerous individuals,” said Ferndale Police Chief Dennis Emmi, per a press release. “Our officers responded immediately, provided critical support to the victim, and worked diligently to identify and arrest the suspect. Ensuring the safety of our community continues to be our top priority.”

Hammonds was arraigned Friday on one count of assault with intent to murder and three counts of felony firearm. His bond was set at $500,000 cash and his next court date is scheduled for June 2. In 43rd District Court.
