(WWJ) – Sunday night’s fiasco at the Oscars left the world buzzing. Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock on-stage at the Academy Awards is all the talk on social media and beyond.
Smith walked on the stage and “smacked the s*** out of” Rock, as the comedian put it, after he had made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been public about her battle with alopecia.
The outburst of violence on live, national TV was certainly a sensational moment. On this edition of The Daily J, WWJ’s Zach Clark took a look back at the time TV news anchor Bill Bonds challenged Mayor Coleman Young to a fight – live on the evening newscast.
While that never came to actual blows, the moment was one that lives forever in local lore. Detroit historian Ken Coleman says the challenge "turned the world upside down," but it apparently arose as a way to help the struggling Detroit Public Schools system.
Coleman, acknowledging he's heard varying versions of "Bonds v. Young" over the years, says "we do tend to sensationalize" these types of story. Which begs the question -- how will Will Smith's "slap heard 'round the world" be remembered decades from now?
