FLINT (WWJ) -- U.S. House Representative Dan Kildee announced Friday that he has been diagnosed with cancer and will be taking time away for treatment and recovery in the following months.

Kildee, who serves Michigan's Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, put out a statement sharing his diagnosis, which began with a preventative scan for a swollen lymph node earlier this year.

The results of that scan showed something more serious, and additional testing revealed a small tumor in one of the congressman's tonsils.

"Thankfully, I caught it very early," Kildee said of his official squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis, which he called "a serious but curable form of cancer."

According to Kildee, the tumor will be surgically removed sometime in late-April. He will spend another few weeks recovering, with medical professionals giving him an excellent prognosis after surgery and treatment.

"It's never easy to hear the words you have cancer," Kildee said, "but I know that so many other families have gone through a cancer diagnosis."

Although he will be stepping away from work during that time, he has promised that his Michigan office will remain open to serve the people of the Eighth District.

Kildee also expressed his appreciation for his family, his wife and the help of his staff, and he thanked his constituents and colleagues for their continued support.

"I am going to get through this. I'm going to beat cancer," he said.
