(WWJ) Visitor restrictions are now in place at Michigan Medicine hospitals to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

In effect beginning Friday, April 2, the health system says no visitors will be allowed for adult patients unless medically necessary.

One of only a handful of exceptions: Pediatric patients can have two parents or caregivers. Up to two support people may accompany a patient on the labor and delivery or postpartum unit. If the patient has tested positive for or is being evaluated for COVID-19, only one support person is allowed and must remain in the patient’s room. Get all the details here.

These tighter restrictions come as COVID-19 hospitalizations in Michigan are spiking; having doubled at Michigan Medicine hospitals.

“At Michigan Medicine, we’ve seen our COVID-19 hospitalizations rise, doubling in the last few weeks to 68 patients today. COVID-19 transmission rates continue to climb,” said Jeffrey Desmond, M.D., chief medical officer at Michigan Medicine. “We have also seen rising rates of COVID-19 in the surrounding communities and rising rates of positive tests. The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority, along with doing what we can to minimize the spread of disease. Restricting visitors is not something we do lightly because we know this is difficult for our patients and their families and friends. But this step will help us slow the spread and help keep all of our Michigan Medicine facilities safe for everyone.”

What to Expect When You Arrive

Screening: All visitors will be screened upon arrival at any of our hospitals or health centers. We do not allow anyone to visit our patients who has symptoms of illness. Visitors must also check in at the Guest Services Desk at the entrance of each hospital or health center.

Masks: A mask or face covering is required to be worn by all patients and visitors — even if you have received a COVID-19 vaccine — on Michigan Medicine grounds, including in parking lots and while in our health care facilities. Masks are provided at each entrance if you do not have one. Our health care teams do not provide exemptions to the mask requirements at our hospitals and health centers. Please note that scarves, bandanas and masks with valves are not allowed. Learn other steps we are taking to keep our patients safe.

This comes as Michigan is seeing a surge in COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. In March the state reported daily totals higher than have been seen since late last year; with daily number topping 6,000 both Wednesday and Thursday this week.
