Get ready for even more orange barrels. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has kicked off the official start of road construction season in Wayne County on Wednesday.

A hard-fought bipartisan deal in Lansing last fall achieved a record two billion dollars in annual state and local road funding.

"When you hit the road this spring and summer, we ask that you slow down and pay attention. There's Michiganders at work here," said Whitmer at the event in Plymouth. She added, "If you find yourself complaining about how much construction you see, well, I'm sorry and you're welcome, because construction season is officially open."

“Repairing and upgrading Wayne County’s roads has long been a priority of my administration, and we have made significant progress,” said Warren Evans, Wayne County Executive. “The concern about the quality of our roads is certainly something we hear about from our residents and responding to those concerns as quickly and effectively as possible remains a top priority. I would also like to thank the Governor for her leadership.”

"The start of construction season isn't just good news for our roads, it's good news for Michigan families, Michigan workers, and Michigan communities,” said Rob Coppersmith, Executive Vice President of the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association.

By the end of the construction season, the Whitmer administration says crews will have repaired more than 26,000 miles of road and nearly 2,000 bridges since she took office.
