ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly approached an elementary school teacher and tried to take her vehicle in Royal Oak on Tuesday.

Officials with Addams Elementary School, located off 2222 W. Webster Road in Royal Oak, sent home a warning to parents about the frightening incident which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

According to the school, an employee with the Young Oaks Latchkey Program was getting into her vehicle with a tall white man wearing a light colored hoodie attempted to get inside.

"However, the doors were locked and the the teacher was able to drive away, but she did report the incident," WWJ's Charlie Langton said.

The suspect remains uncaught as of Thursday and parents have noticed an increased police presence in the area, especially before class begins and after students are released for the day.

According to the U.S. Department of State, carjackings have become one of the most prevalent crimes in the world.

"The first step to avoiding an attack is to stay alert at all times and be aware of your environment," the department advised.

The most likely places for a carjacking are:

• High crime areas
• Lesser traveled roads (rural areas)
• Intersections where you must stop Isolated areas in parking lots
• Residential driveways and gates
• Traffic jams or congested areas

Officials say residents should learn to avoid these areas and situations if possible.

"Avoidance is the best way to prevent an attack. Use your judgment to evaluate the situation and possible reactions," federal officials said. "Know safe areas to go to in an emergency. Always carry your cell phone or radio."

Nonconfrontation is often the best response, the department added.

"The objective is not to thwart the criminal but to survive."
