ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WWJ) -- A man is in police custody after a reported shooting and police stand-off in Royal Oak Township Tuesday night.
It all unfolded around 7:30 p.m. when Michigan State Police were investigating a report of gunshots near Bethlawn and Pasadena Streets. When a trooper showed up to the scene, he saw a 22-year-old man from Royal Oak Township standing in the front yard of his house, holding a shotgun.
When the trooper made contact with the man and ordered him to drop the gun, the suspect refused. After several commands to drop the weapon, the man finally did and took off running into the house.
Police were informed by witnesses at the scene that the suspect had other weapons inside the home and troopers established a perimeter, attempting to convince the suspect to surrender.
After around 45 minutes of being barricaded inside the home, the man surrendered and was taken into custody.
Authorities say the man, whose name has not been released, had been the victim of an assault and was firing his gun in the air out of frustration. Police have not disclosed details of the alleged assault.
A search of the man’s house led to the seizure of an additional handgun.
The suspect was taken to Providence Hospital in Southfield for mental health care and prosecutors are reviewing the case for possible charges.
