DETROIT (WWJ) – Traffic is moving again after a hazmat situation prompted a freeway closure in Detroit Wednesday night.

Eastbound I-96 was closed near Martin Luther King Boulevard after two semi-trucks crashed around 7:30 p.m., spilling natural gas onto the freeway, Michigan State Police officials said.

The freeway re-opened just before 10 p.m.

Fire crews handled the Level 1 hazmat situation, while MSP troopers were directing traffic off the freeway at Warren Avenue.

MSP officials said there were no injuries in the crash.

It was not clear what happened in the moments leading up to the crash, which is still under investigation.

Authorities said it is a “flexible situation” and more details would be released as they became available.
