DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police said at least two people were taken into custody after a trooper was shot multiple times during an undercover operation on Detroit's west side early Tuesday morning.
Lt. Mike Shaw told WWJ's Charlie Langton that two parties were tracked down and arrested in Romulus, hours after a gunman allegedly open fired on a trooper.
Shaw said the trooper -- a ten year veteran of the force -- was working as part of an undercover narcotics task force when shots rang out at an apartment complex in the 14000 block of Riverview Street and Telegraph around 1:30 a.m.
The trooper was immediately transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Langton reported the state police officer is believed to undergo surgery.
Shaw spoke to Langton, stating their aviation unit along with troopers on the ground coordinated to bring those they believed responsible under arrest.
"We did some video surveillance and we were able to pick up a suspect through that surveillance," Shaw said "Our surveillance team was able to start following behind certain people that were seen on the videos and we used our aviation unit as well to follow this car. A traffic stop was conducted by those cars we just saw leave this area and both parties were taken into custody at this time."
Langton said a police search of the Infinity Apartment complex where the shooting occurred in Detroit revealed three gun casings and at least one weapon, although police haven't clarified if the weapon is or is not a gun.
Shaw said they are waiting on updates about the injured state police officer from hospital staff as the morning continues.
"We have notified his family and his family is with him and that's kind of where we're at with that right now," he told Langton.
Police spent several hours trying to determine if the gunman was barricaded in one of the apartment buildings or if they had managed to escape.
Police are also trying to find out if more than one person was involved in the incident.
"We don't know the suspect. We don't know if there's one or two or three," Shaw said. "We don't know any things like that right now, that's all stuff we're trying to determine."
Anyone traveling in West Detroit has been asked to steer clear of the area while police continue to secure the scene. Langton reported that the Jefferies Service Drive is closed due to heavy police presence and travelers should seek alternative routes.
