DETROIT (WWJ) -- Spring is here; and that means the start of thunderstorm season in Southeast Michigan.
A line of showers and thunderstorms moved across the Metro Detroit area on Wednesday, bringing heavy downpours, gusty winds and even some hail.
With heavy rains and wind gusts as high as 60 mph in some places, many Metro Detroiters had a bit of a tougher evening commute. There were several area freeway ramps that experienced flooding, including I-75 to I-94 in downtown Detroit and the Campbell-Hilton on-ramp to I-696.
There were reports of large hail near Warren in the early evening.
The threat of an isolated tornado was possible outside of the Metro Detroit area to the south, the NWS said earlier in the day.
Michigan State Police said drivers could expect some ponding on the freeway shoulders and travel lanes. "So keep a larger following distance from the car in front of you so you have time and space to stop," MSP Metro Detroit said in a tweet.
This forecast led to the cancelation of a tornado drill that was set for 1 p.m. in multiple Michigan communities, as part of a statewide tornado drill. NWS has also canceled the planned NOAA All-Hazards Radio Test.
