SAULT STE. MARIE (WWJ) — A Northern Michigan man is thanking a Michigan State Police trooper who helped save his life after a Halloween scare.

The incident happened on Thursday, Oct. 31, as a man from Levering — about 12 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge — was working on the MSP Saulte Ste. Marie Post, which has been undergoing construction.

The 43-year-old old man was trying to move large sheets of drywall when they unexpectedly fell on him, trapping him underneath, MSP officials said.

He was able to call for help and Trooper Paul Ferraro, who was inside the post at the time, “faintly heard the man’s cries for help and immediately rushed outside.”

The trooper lifted the heavy drywall sheets up just enough for the trapped man to get out, MSP officials said. The man did not suffer any major injuries, according to MSP.

While MSP shared video Friday showing the drywall falling on top of the man as he bent down to tie his shoe, no video of the rescue was released.

He “expressed sincere gratitude” for Trooper Ferraro’s efforts, officials said.

“This incident could have had a much more serious outcome,” said Trooper Ferraro. “I’m just glad I was nearby to help.”

MSP officials said when working alone, whether at home or on the job, it’s important to prioritize safety.

“Before starting any project, plan your tasks carefully and identify potential hazards to ensure you are prepared for any challenges. Additionally, it may be a good idea to notify a friend or family member about your work plans, including the expected duration and location. This way, someone will be aware of your activities and can check on you if needed,” the MSP Eighth District said in a press release.
