SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A pair of Shelby Township Police officers are hailed heroes for saving the life of a choking baby boy.

Police were called to a home on 24 Mile Road between Van Dyke and Mound, on Thursday (5/13) around 4:30 p.m., for a baby not breathing. The officer on scene was taken upstairs to a one-year-old infant lying on the ground.

“(He) was not breathing, started to turn blue, and did not have a pulse,” Shelby Township Police said in the press release.

Officer Nye started CPR with back thrusts, while Officer Washburn arrived on scene to assist. Family told police that the baby could have been choking. Shelby Township Fire also came to help administer CPR.

First responders rushed the baby by ambulance to a local hospital. The infant was intubated and cared for in the NICU. As of Friday, he is breathing on his own and “expected to make a full recovery.”

“Due to the life saving measures and the quick response time of Officer N. Nye and Officer Washburn, they saved a young child’s life,” the press release read.
