HILLSDALE COUNTY (WWJ) A Hillsdale County Sheriff’s deputy has died hours after he was shot in an officer-involved shooting in south-central Michigan.

Michigan State Police said the suspect, identified as Eric Fiddler, is also dead. State Police said they found him in a field near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo roads on Thursday around 6:15 p.m., following a massive manhunt involving State Police helicopters, K9 teams and state and local authorities.

The shooting happened in Jefferson Township, about 35 miles southwest of Jackson.

“Fiddler was instructed to surrender and produced a weapon and fired on troopers,” State Police said in a statement on X. “Troopers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced deceased on scene.”

State Police said Fiddler is accused of shooting the deputy around 4 p.m. in a rural area surrounded by cornfields at the intersection of Beecher and Lamb roads, about 2.5 miles from where troopers eventually found Fiddler.

“We are sad to add that the deputy who was shot on scene has passed away from his injuries,” State Police said.

The slain deputy has not been identified “pending notification of his family.”

His death comes less than a week after Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy Brad Reckling was killed in Detroit in the line of duty, leaving behind three young girls ranging in ages from one to six, and a wife expecting their fourth child.
