TUSCOLA COUNTY (WWJ) - A Tuscola County sheriff's deputy had to airlifted to a hospital on Friday night after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver while helping a disabled motorist along M-24 near Saginaw.

The Tuscola County Sheriff's Office said Sheriff's Deputy Thomas Peterson is expected to make a full recovery, but the incident stands as a "poignant reminder of the constant dangers that our deputies and law enforcement officers face on a daily basis while serving our community."

According to a press release, Peterson was assisting another deputy with a disabled vehicle on M-24 and East Blackmore Road in Fremont Township, roughly 32 miles east of Saginaw, when he was struck by a passing motorist.

Peterson sustained numerous injuries and was immediately airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.

The motorist that struck Peterson was identified as a 54-year-old Caro man. He was arrested, deputies said, and is now facing his third OWI offense.

The sheriff's office said Peterson has served Tuscola County since February of 2018.

"On behalf of Deputy Peterson and his family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who assisted, reached out, and cared for him during this challenging time," the TSCO said in an update to social media. "Your support and kindness have been invaluable during this difficult period."

The sheriff's office urged the community to remain vigilant and prioritize safety when out on the road, especially where emergency vehicles are present.

"Let us continue to work together to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community," authorities stated.

The incident comes less than month after Michigan State Trooper Joel Popp was struck and killed on northbound I-75 in neighboring Saginaw County.

Popp was standing outside his patrol vehicle and assisting with an investigation into a suspected impaired driver when an 81-year-old motorist hit him and two other MSP vehicles at the scene.

Popp was rushed to Hurley Medical Center in Flint with serious injuries where he later died.
