
BLOOMINGDALE TWP, MICH. (WWJ) An Amish buggy crash caused by a suspected drunk driver left six people hospitalized in West Michigan, sheriff's officials said.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said one of the victims is in critical condition, four have serious injuries; and one had "no obvious injuries", but still received medical care.
The crash happened in Bloomingdale Township, about 20 miles west of Kalamazoo, on Country Road 388 near 45th Street-- on Friday, August 8, around 7:45 p.m.
According to sheriff's officials; the SUV rear-ended the buggy while it was traveling westbound on the rural road.
First responders arrived at the scene and began treating all six people who were riding in the buggy. They took all of them to the hospital.
No further information was released on the ages or genders of the victims, or how they knew each other.
Sheriff's officials said the driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors. The driver was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) Causing Serious Injury, and lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
