Six-year-old girl dies in early morning house fire on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WWJ) A six-year-old Detroit girl died in a house fire on the city's west side, fire officials said.

Detroit Fire Department (DFD) officials said the fire happened on Sunday, December 14, on Rutherford Street (12000 block) in the area of I-96 and Southfield Freeway. DFD received the call of "people trapped" shortly before 6 a.m.

Authorities said DFD crews arrived at the burning home with 5 minutes and 53 seconds of the first 911 call. They worked to extinguish the flames, and entered the building.

According to DFD, crews discovered the six-year-old girl with "severe burns." Medics pronounced her dead after they arrived.

A woman and a 4-year-old boy were also injured in the fire, DFD said.

The woman is in serious condition. The boy suffered smoke inhalation, but is expected to recover; according to DFD.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
