(WWJ) Authorities say there were only minor injuries when a small plane crashed in northern Macomb County, Thursday evening.
According to Michigan State Police, flight instructor and student pilot had to make an emergency landing after the engine on their single engine plane started smoking, after taking off from Oakland International Airport.
MSP said the fixed-wing, singe engine 1976 Piper Model PA-28-151 aircraft had sustained a cracked cylinder, which caused an oil leak inside the engine compartment causing the engine to smoke mid-flight.
As the plane neared Romeo State Airport in Ray Township, at around 7:45 p.m., the pair decided to shut down the engine and make an emergency landing.
When the plane crash-landed, the front wheel broke off and plane skidded down the runway.
The instructor had minor injuries, MSP said, but the trainee wasn't hurt.
The FAA is investigating.
