DETROIT (WWJ) -- Fast-falling snow, snow squalls and some icy spots could make travel dangerous for drivers across Southeast Michigan Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service warned that an arctic front would pass through the Metro Detroit region, bringing with it brief but intense snow showers along with colder temperatures.
WWJ AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson said some of these snow showers will drop quick accumulations, although they may not come soon enough to impact the PM commute.
"Now, we are keeping an eye on the radar," Thompson said, speaking live on WWJ, late Wedneday afternoon. "There are a few flurries, even a few patches of freezing drizzle that popped up along 69 from Lansing over toward Flint, even into portions of Lapeer County. Something to keep in mind: might be a few slick spots here or there."
As freezing drizzle mixes with the flurries, Thompson said that could make the roads and freeways quickly slick.
While this will not be a major snow event, Thompson said most Metro Detroiter will see some accumulation. The biggest concern, he said, remains how quickly it'll come down.
"And we will have those snow swells coming through as we head through the evening again, mostly after about 7 o'clock, the way it looks now and a quick coating to an inch, certainly possible, reduced visibility, hazardous travel — especially with the wind blowing and the wind will be stronger in any of these. But the wind is already pretty gusty so that will also reduce visibility," Thompson said.
Meanwhile, it will be quite cold.
Overnight, the low in Metro Detroit will be around 20 degrees, although it will feel more like the single digits out there with the wind chill.
Thompson said there will be some lingering flurries overnight and into Thursday.
But will we see more snow?
"There can be some snow showers as you get out toward the I-69 corridor," Thompson said, "especially as there will be some lake effect activity with a Northwester flow behind this storm."
There's currently no snow in the forecast for Friday into the weekend.
In fact, AccuWeather says Metro Detroit could see a little sunshine on a milder Sunday, when temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-40s. (See the daily daily AccuWeather forecast HERE).
