SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- After an hours-long standoff, officials said a barricaded man surrendered himself to Southfield Police, late Friday afternoon.
According to Police Chief Elvin Barren. officers responded at around 12:45 p.m. to the scene, at a home near the intersection of Ariel and Pennsylvania, in a neighborhood near Greenfield Rd. and Mt. Vernon.
Barren said a man was doing drugs, and may have been drinking, when he allegedly attacked his elderly father, before barricading himself in the basement.
No one was seriously hurt.
Neighbors were alarmed to see police with their guns drawn, and some spectators gathered, as Barren urged the public to keep their distance.
"We do have police officers keeping the barrier between the community and the target location," Barren said, at a news briefing. "The suspect, again, according to the SWAT team, he is in the basement, so we're going to continue to maintain a tight perimeter to ensure that we have containment of the suspect and there has been communication with him."
Drones were used to make sure the house was clear.
Barren said a negotiator urged the man to come out, and that he'd be OK.
"No significant crime has been committed. And so work with our officers, come out and we'll get you the help that you need. Your family loves you. They've expressed that they're very concerned about your well-being.so please come out at the direction of the Southfield police officers and we'll get you the help that you need."
Reporting from the scene, at around 4:45 p.m., WWJ's Darrylin Horne said the man ultimately came out of the house, and was taken into custody.
No shots were fired.
"Police are saying it ended peacefully," Horne said. "A man had been on narcotics all day, but he exited the home peacefully."
It's not yet clear what charges the man may face, as the investigation continues.
