SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Southfield Police have arrested a man accused of robbing a PNC bank branch while armed with an ax, and assaulting a teller.

Reporting from the scene at bank on Northwestern Highway near Franklin Road, WWJ's Darrylin Horne said bank employees were gathered outside and appeared shaken after the incident.

According to the Southfield PD, the suspect — identified as a 55-year-old Southfield man — entered the bank at around 12:30 p.m., while wielding an ax.

He demanded money from a teller, but when she handed over the money he struck her in the head with the weapon before fleeing, police said.

Police tracked the suspect to Joy Road and Greenfield in Detroit where he was taken into custody at around 1:30 p.m.

The teller was taken to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition. No one else was hurt.

Asked if the teller what hit by the blade or the blunt end of the ax, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren did not immediately have an answer.

It remained an active scene after 4 p.m., with an extensive police presence in the bank parking lot. Officials said the bank would remain closed for the rest of the day.
