SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) — A 19-year-old suspect is behind bars after a carjacking last Friday morning in Southfield.

Southfield police officials announced Monday 19-year-old Hubbie Marion III is facing 10 total charges, including felony carjacking, fleeing and eluding and assault with a dangerous weapon.

It all unfolded around 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 31 when Marion allegedly approached a man in his driveway near the intersection of Negaunee and Shiawassee — near 8 Mile and Grand River — and demanded the man’s SUV.

The man complied with the suspect’s demands and then hid in his garage and called 911, reporting the suspect was armed with what appeared to be a machine gun, according to audio of the 911 call released Monday.

Marion was ultimately tracked down by police and arrested within a half hour of the carjacking, officials said.

Dash camera footage shows Marion crashing the blue SUV into bushes and then trying to run away while armed with the assault weapon.

The second police car to arrive on scene hit Marion while he was trying to run away. He fell to the ground before getting up and surrendering moments later.

“Talk about a violent suspect who has the audacity to exit the vehicle holding an assault weapon in front of multiple police officers,” Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren said Monday at a press conference. “And then you ask a question I posed earlier: what was his intention? Was it to get stable and then turn that weapon on the officers? Was it to carjack another individual in the community, or was it to try to enter someone’s home?”

Speaking at Monday’s press conference, Southfield Police Chief Elvin Barren called the carjacking “an extremely rare occurrence” in the city.

“Think about this young man who was carjacked. Think about it — he’s traumatized. At his own home, he’s carjacked. He’s never gonna get over that,” Barren said.

In all, Marion is charged with one count of felony carjacking, one count of third-degree fleeing and eluding, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of resisting and obstructing police and three counts of felony firearm.

He was also charged with driving on a suspended license.

Marion’s bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety. His next court date has been scheduled for Friday, Feb. 14.
