DETROIT (WWJ) - One driver is dead after troopers say they were speeding when they lost control on a Detroit freeway and crashed into concrete barriers on Friday night.
Michigan State Police said troopers with the Metro Post responded to reports of a crash involving one vehicle on the westbound lanes of I-96 local near Evergreen around 10:45 p.m.
When troopers arrived at the scene along with EMS personnel, they found a wrecked GMC Yukon at rest on the right shoulder. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the incident determined that a 47-year-old resident of Redford Township was driving the SUV at a high rate of speed before they suddenly lost control in a curve. The vehicle smashed into the left concrete barrier before crashing into the barriers on the other side of the road and coming to a stop.
The driver's identity was not released, but MPS said the investigation was complete and the driver's family was notified.
A medical examiner's report is currently pending.
MSP 1st Lt. Mike Shaw said the crash is the latest tragic incident that could possibly have been avoided.
" Unfortunately we are still seeing these preventable traffic crashes on our roadways," Shaw said. "Another family is mourning the loss of a loved one. These continued risky driving behaviors are putting all of us at risk."
