ST. CLAIR COUNTY (WWJ) -- One driver is dead in St. Clair County after authorities say he was speeding and lost control before he was thrown from his vehicle on Tuesday evening.
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department said deputies responded to the scene of a single-vehicle rollover crash reported around 7:47 p.m. on August 1 in the 7600 block of Smiths Creek Rd in Wales Township.
Callers told 911 that the driver may have been ejected from the vehicle as no one was inside.
When deputies arrived, they found a 59-year-old Kimball Township man with "extensive injuries."
Emergency personnel from Richmond-Lenox EMS attempted life-saving measures, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation conducted by deputies revealed that the man was driving a 2010 Buick Lacrosse westbound on Smiths Creek Rad when it left the right hand side of the roadway and went into a ditch.
"The Buick continued westbound where it struck a private driveway and became airborne and rolled over several times ejecting the driver," the sheriff's office said.
Authorities added that the man was speeding and wasn't wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. A toxicology report to detect if drugs or alcohol are also factors is currently pending.
No other details were released. The sheriff's office credits Richmond-Lenox EMS, Memphis Fire Department and the Michigan State Police for assisting at the scene.
