(WWJ) – Officials are warning beachgoers that temperatures on the Great Lakes are still cool after a St. Clair Shores woman was rescued from the waters of Lake Huron on Sunday.
The woman became stranded in the water off Sleeper State Park near Caseville around 5:40 p.m. Sunday on an inner tube, according to the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded in a patrol boat from Caseville after getting a call from the woman’s husband reporting that she was “drifting uncontrollably” out into open Lake Huron and was unable to get back to shore.
When deputies showed up she was about a half mile offshore with two kayakers trying to help her. But the wind and current were so strong that they were unable to make any headway.
The woman was eventually brought aboard the patrol boat and taken to the Caseville Harbor, where she was checked out by EMS personnel because she was in mid-60 degree water for around 90 minutes.
She was released a short time later to awaiting family.
“Beach goers are advised that water temperatures are still cool, especially the further you get off shore,” Sheriff Kelly Hanson said in a press release. “Hypothermia is very real during prolonged exposure to it and should not be taken for granted.”
Officials say beachgoers should “always use caution when using beach toys on days the wind is coming from shore.”
Even light breezes can be difficult to overcome without a paddle or some other type of a propulsion device, officials said.
