FRASER (WWJ) - One person -- reportedly a student -- is dead after a stabbing "incident" near a middle school and high school in Fraser on Tuesday evening, WWJ's Mike Campbell reports.

Officials have released very little information about the alleged stabbing that occurred around 4:45 p.m. yesterday near Richards Middle School on Garfield Road near Klein Road in Macomb County.

While details are unclear, visibly upset students heading to class on Wednesday morning told Campbell those involved in the alleged stabbing were students.

Unconfirmed reports say one teen was killed after two groups "got into it," and another is hospitalized in critical condition, Campbell said.

In a letter addressed to parents, school officials did clarify the incident occurred off school grounds and afterhours, but it did prompt the lockdown of both the middle school and Fraser High School.

Authorities with the Fraser Department of Public Safety said an investigation into the incident was ongoing -- details are expected to be released later today.

Fraser Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Wozniak said administration, faculty, and staff are working with police in the investigation.

"We realize that this is a very challenging time for our community, and we need to respect everyone's privacy and the integrity of the investigation," Wozniak said.

"We know social media can be challenging to monitor and process. I encourage you to be aware of what your child sees on social media and in our community. I urge you to talk with your child and make sure they are receiving accurate information," the superintendent said to parents.

As a precaution, police will be at both schools on Wednesday while counselors and social workers will be on hand to address any student concerns.

"We understand there have been many questions regarding the external lockdown that occurred earlier this evening," Wozniak said. "Please know the events the police are investigating occurred off campus and after school."
