It was tense situation Thursday afternoon in Royal Oak, where police were in a standoff with an armed man in his basement.

Royal Oak Police say they were assisting Ferndale Police with an investigation in a home on Cummings Street, where the man had hidden in a cubby hole behind the basement stairs.

The Oakland County Swat team was called in; and -- using an Oakland County Sherriff's Office robot --- officers were able to determine that the man had eventually passed out and was no longer holding the gun.

It's not clear why. He was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation.

No shots were fired and there were no injuries, police Royal Oak Police Chief Corey O'Donahue said.

"The officers on scene did a great job," the chief told WWJ's Sandra McNeill. "In this type of situation there's no reason to rush it. And we're grateful that we were able to take the individuation into custody anf nobody was hurt."

The investigation is ongoing.
